Essential Travel Info
Everything you need to know for a seamless journey through Southern Italy.
Climate & Seasons
Spring
April – June. Perfect for hiking and archaeological tours. Mild weather and blooming landscapes.
Summer
July – August. Peak beach season. Vibrant nightlife in Tropea and Scilla, though temperatures can be high.
Autumn
Sept – October. The “Golden Season.” Great for wine harvests, food festivals, and warm sea temperatures.
Winter
Nov – March. Quiet and authentic. Skiing is possible in the Sila mountains while the coast remains mild.
Money & Connectivity
Currency & Tipping
The Euro (€) is official. While cards are widely accepted, we recommend carrying some cash for small village shops. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory (approx. 5-10%).
Electricity
Italy uses Type C, F, and L plugs (230V). Travelers from North America will need a power adapter and potentially a transformer for non-dual voltage devices.
Mobile & Wi-Fi
4G/5G is excellent on the coast. Consider an eSIM (Airalo) or a local SIM (TIM/Vodafone) for the best data reliability in rural mountain areas.
What to Pack
- Comfortable walking shoes (for cobblestones)
- Modest clothing for churches (shoulders/knees covered)
- A light jacket (even in summer for mountain nights)
- Sun protection (Southern sun is intense)
- Digital & physical copies of travel insurance
Transportation in Calabria
Calabria is a rugged region. While public transport exists, reaching the most beautiful hidden spots often requires private arrangements.
By Train
The main “Trenitalia” line runs along the coast connecting Lamezia Terme, Tropea, and Reggio Calabria. It is scenic and reliable for coastal travel.
By Car
The A2 motorway is the main artery. Driving in mountain villages can be challenging. For stress-free travel, we recommend our Private Chauffeur Services.
